Change Essay

Change is one of the best things to experience. Many argue that they prefer to avoid change, as it is uncomfortable, unstable, and inconvenient. Good or bad, I do my best to welcome change. I believe any kind of change is good for you in the end as change prompts you to learn. In between changes, there is a state of awkwardness, uncertainty, and some level of pain that is to be experienced. Whether it’s a new job and you need to learn a new skill or you lose something and have to learn to adapt without it.

In class, we were asked to write a prompt describing someone or something that changed us. I wrote about my friend Grayson, someone who taught me to always change. Grayson is a man of many interests, from bartending, powerlifting, cars, making music, and so much more. People have many interests, but what makes Grayson special is his willingness to take action and go through the ups and downs of change. I know for myself, it can be hard to start a new hobby as I always feel like I need the perfect moment, the right tools, or a certain amount of energy to start. Even then, I sometimes fear the awkwardness and frustration that I would have to undergo when starting the hobby, let alone face the uncertainty of not knowing whether or not I will be good at the hobby or end up hating it. However, because of Grayson’s growth mentality when facing change, he goes into uncertainty with his own self-assurance that if he either succeeds or fails, he will have learned something new. Over the years, I’ve adopted Grayon’s mentality and the changes in my life have been amazing. I’ve built many new skills that I can resume progress on after taking a break from them thanks to committing my time to learn and undergo the changes necessary to learn these skills.

Something I’ve learned about change though is that it takes trust in not only the process but trust in yourself to change. When I’ve tackled the task of changing my habits and replacing bad habits with good ones, it can be weeks before I see change. During those weeks, I begin to doubt and reconsider going back to my habits, the way things were before, before I underwent a change. Out of all the times I tried to change, I am grateful for all of them. Whether I trusted the process and finally achieved change or I failed and went back to staying the same,  I learned something new every single time. What is great about change is that it is never over, you can always change, you can always continue to succeed at changing or you can go back and try to change again.
